The WVU Mountainlair, or just the 'lair' I first recall seeing Melissa during the spring semester 1997 at WVU in the Mountainlair arcade. She had started school in the fall of 1996, but I wasn't in school at the time because I needed a little break. I remember thinking it odd to see a girl in the arcade. Being an arcade veteran, usually when there is a girl in the arcade she is with her boyfriend, so I assumed she was with one of the guys there. It was not till I saw her step up to play X-men Vs. Street Fighter till I realized she was actually quite good and was there to play.
Since we were always playing X-men Vs. Street Fighter against each other and a slew of other people, we really didn't get too much of a chance to talk one on one. On the last day of that semester I happened to bump into her on the way to a final.

* Melissa: Actually, I bumped into him, on purpose. He was walking a block behind me while going to class, so i decided to run back to talk. At this time I was afraid Trubie thought I was just annoying.

We finally had a chance to talk one on one. We chatted while we walked and when we finally had to part ways I really wanted to ask for her phone number but decided not to. I figured I'd probably see her over the summer, so it would be best not to push my luck or anything. Little did I know, she lived in Uniontown, and she wasn't really going to be in Morgantown much in the summer.

* Melissa: I had a crush on Trubie all summer.

The arcade...and the X-Men vs. Street Fighter Machine After a long summer without seeing Melissa I figured that any chance I once had was probably completely gone. Along came the first day of class, and for some reason I woke up long before my alarm went off. Being awake early, I thought I'd go ahead down to the 'Lair and play some games. As I walked through the door, I saw Melissa playing X-men Vs. Street Fighter.

* Melissa: Okay, I was only in the Lair at that time because of this Nutrition class. I was the only hygiene student to take this class at 9:00. Everyone else took it 10:00. Because I took it so early I had to waste time at the Lair every morning because my next class wasn't until 11:30. Trubie just happened to be there too, because as he said, he just got up early for some reason. Why did I take the class earlier than everyone else....I have no idea. I don't know why I choose that time. But because I did Trubie and I got to know eachother better and started going out.....can you say, destiny.

It actually felt as if my heart skipped a beat. Once she was done, we had another chance to talk for a long time, one on one. The conversation centered almost 100% on video games and anime. This made me think Melissa was the perfect woman.

However, I was crushed when Ken informed me Melissa had a boyfriend.

* Melissa: Yep I did. He was my boyfriend for 5 years. (and my mom really disliked him)

I decided I didn't care. I at the very least wanted to hang out with this girl even if nothing could come of it. On Saturday I went to the Mountaineers vs. Marshall game with Ken. After the game, Ken told me Melissa wanted me to call her that night because she had dumped her boyfriend.

* Melissa: Well, Ken had been playing the little match maker for the first two weeks of class. I had a boyfriend but i really had a crush on Trubie. And Ken kept telling me that Trubie really liked me. So....I just upped and dumped my boyfriend one night to the surprise of everyone I knew. I wasn't getting along with him, and all I was thinking about was Trubie. And Ken told me that if i led Trubie on and broke his heart, he'd kill me.

We talked for a long time and she came over the next day. Well.. I could add several more paragraphs, but to make an even longer story short, she stayed over extremely late, we ended up kissing, and were definitely an item.

* We were offically going out on September 1, 1997, and by some amazing coincidence we were able to plan our wedding for September 1, 2001.
